First Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ)

Hello, and welcome to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Jacksonville, Florida. We are located in the Mandarin area on San Jose Blvd. Please join us for worship led by Rev. Jeff Smith every Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Do you play guitar?

Once upon a time, we had a praise band. They rocked, and all was well. Life led our musicians away, and now our praise and worship experience just isn't complete. If you play the guitar and feel called to be a part of worship here, please reach out to us. We'd love to talk to you.

Location & Times

Weekly Schedule

We have worship opportunities on Sunday and Wednesday mornings. We hope you'll join us!

9:00 Praise Worship

Our first service each Sunday is a praise and worship service. This is a small, family-friendly service characterized primarily by uplifting music by our praise team. Both the praise and worship service and the traditional service are Communion services. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper every Sunday, and we practice open Communion, which means it is not necessary to belong to this congregation to partake.

9:45 Education Hour

We offer multiple educational opportunities for youth and adults alike during our Sunday School time:

  • Fireflies, an interactive devotional for youth in grades 3, 4, and 5
  • Live Wires, our middle and high school group
  • A Young Adult class
  • A traditional Bible study
11:00 Worship

The 11:00 service is our traditional worship experience. Both the praise and worship service and the traditional service are Communion services. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper every Sunday, and we practice open Communion, which means it is not necessary to belong to this congregation to partake.

11:00 Children's Worship and Wonder

Our Children's Worship and Wonder program is a worship experience for children from age 3 to second grade. They start in the Sanctuary for the first part of the 11:00 service and stay for the Children's Moment led by our Minister of Youth and Families, Karen Billy. After the Children's Moment, the children move to the Education Building to continue their own worship experience led by trained storytellers.

12:00 p.m. Communion Service

Every Wednesday, we meet for a brief time of meditation and Communion at noon. We invite you to join us on your lunch hour or while you are out running errands. Maybe you could not join us on Sunday morning due to work or travel schedules; this is an opportunity to worship and receive Communion each week.

6:30 Wednesday Night Friends Dinner

During the school year, we meet on Wednesday evenings for dinner. If you'd like to join us for dinner, we need you to sign up so that we have enough food for everyone. Adult meals are $5, and meals for children 12 and under are $3.

7:00 Wednesday Night Friends Activities

We have activities for our youth, an adult Bible study program, and choir practice.

About Us

Our Church

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Jacksonville grew out of a small group who began meeting in homes in 1883. The first two buildings were destroyed by fire in 1901 and 1925. By December 1926, the church had relocated to downtown Jacksonville at the intersection of Church St. and Julia St. In December 1982, the congregation held its first worship service in its new Mandarin location. Education space was added in 1986, and the new Sanctuary was dedicated on April 26, 1998. Our senior minister, Rev. Jeff Smith, has led our church since March 1, 2000.

What to Expect

We are a caring group of people, from all backgrounds and beliefs, who gather every Sunday to break bread together in Holy Communion. Our church grew out of the Restoration Movement in the early 1800s. As such, we prize religious liberty and believe that unity within the Church comes from a couple of old Restoration era sayings: "No Creed but Christ" and "No book but the Bible." Simply put, we are a community full of differences in hometowns, sports allegiances, and political beliefs, but, when we come together to worship God, we put our differences aside and celebrate God's love through Jesus Christ.

Come as you are. All are welcome.
